Start with Why Book Notes and Agile Coaching Applications – Part 2

Hello everybody! Please see part 2 of my blog series that includes notes from the Start With Why Book. How you can apply the notes as an Agile Coach is also included. Cheers!

Ch 2 Carrots and Sticks

  • Fear is a manipulation tactic that doesn’t build trust
  • How does fear impact employees work lives?
  • How can trust be developed?
  • Aspirations – short term responses to long term desires – example – want to get in shape and buy a gym membership but never go. Most susceptible are people lacking discipline or have fear that they can’t achieve dreams on own.

How can Agile Coaches apply this to their coaching practice?

Addressing Fears and Concerns:

  • Proactively ask team members about their feelings and any fears or concerns they have in the current work environment.
  • Take steps to alleviate these fears and create a safe and supportive team culture by actively listening, offering support, and addressing issues promptly.
  • Foster open communication and ensure that everyone feels heard and respected within the team.

Building Trust:

  • Encourage team members to communicate openly and honestly with each other, creating an environment of trust and psychological safety.
  • Promote a culture of transparency and collaboration, where ideas and concerns can be freely shared without fear of judgment or repercussions.
  • Foster team cohesion through team-building activities and opportunities for shared decision-making.

Focus on Long-Term Goals:

  • Help team members set clear, meaningful long-term development goals that align with their aspirations.
  • Provide structure and support to help individuals stay focused and accountable towards their goals.
  • Regularly follow up with team members to track progress, provide guidance, and address any challenges or obstacles they may encounter along the way.
